In 2018, Maritza Cardenas founded Morenita Mía Shoes to establish the classic Mexican Huarache sandal as an essential shoe that belongs in everyone’s closet. It all began with the Inés Mules, named after Maritza’s mom, and the journey has only continued since then.

The Huarache sandals are handmade in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico — the hometown of Maritza’s parents — and were a staple piece for her since she was a child. Her love of and exposure to Huaraches inspired her to make them a recognizable classic even among those who don’t have a personal connection to them.  

Morenita Mía Shoes is also focused on creating better opportunities for artisans in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico by developing a manufacturing facility that prioritizes the rights of the Mexican artisans that produce its stylish, handmade leather sandals.
